Our long-term partners and friends from El Salvador's Finca El Majahual have always been a source of inspiration for us. Their commitment to quality and promoting social projects, coupled with a passion to constantly evolve, improve and try new things, have resulted in surprising new coffees and initiatives each year, like this and last year's La Cancha coffee, processed in collaboration with the elementary school that sits within the farm's property.
This year, the Murray-Alvarez family took on a new project, another new approach that they're trying for the first time, and we're delighted to be able to support this initiative. El Apoyo is a coffee cultivated not in El Majahual, but on land adjacent to the farm, owned by 9 smallholder farmers - the farm's neighbors. These producers did not have direct access to markets that could pay properly for their excellent coffees, and were contemplating the possibility of chopping down all of their coffee trees and replacing them with corn. The Murray-Alvarez's, who recognized their neighbors' lots potential, decided to step in and use their reputation and market access in order to sell these lots.
And we should all be thankful they did, because this coffee is an excellent El Salvador espresso, similar in character to El Majahual coffees but with a unique twist of floral notes. We're proud of our partners for their efforts to empower and support their community, and we hope to be able to secure more El Apoyo lots in the years to come.
